How to make a splash in Social Media

This blog aims to look into different aspects of Marketing and Affiliate Marketing and how it is aided by Social Media. In some cases marketing through social media can be intentional and company’s are able to reach a huge audience through the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. In other cases, situations or events may occur that catch on over the web and a trend is born, allowing a company to take full advantage of the audience the certain subject has captured.
I have chosen to share this video for my first post. A short clip in which Alexis Ohanian (co-founder of Reddit), looks at a certain scenario in which a Greenpeace campaign went viral, gathering a huge amount of support through the use of Social Media.
The story is a great example to how quickly a post on a social media site can turn into a Marketing campaign. From 5% of votes on Reddit to 78% of votes, Facebook groups and applications being created to save ‘Mister Splashy Pants’ the whale.  The story was transferring over to the real world, with signs being put up in schools and public places, Greenpeace took advantage and were able to make a whole marketing campaign, selling t-shirts to e-cards to its followers and ultimately gaining more support for the cause.

Most importantly the campaign helped to achieve Greenpeace‘s main goal, to save the whales. The Japanese government called off the Whale expedition, thanks to a web trend! This really does show the power of Social Media.
